Our Greenway Centre was zinging on Saturday 29th March as residents, community groups, and visitors came together to celebrate everything Southmead, and the blossoming of new initiatives and partnerships.
There was a spring in everyone’s Southmead step as the sun shone and the doors opened on a day of joyous sharing and togetherness.
Scrumptious fresh and local food included treats thanks to Bristol Sudanese Association, Travelling Kitchen, and One Green Kitchen. Everything brimmed with flavour and left people grinning with delight!
The Greenway Market was packed with wonderful arts, handmade gifts, and pre-loved treasures, all from local makers and sellers, with superb and affordable snacks and cuppas served by Southmead volunteers.
Southmead Men’s Space put their finest wares on show including bird boxes, clocks, benches, and chairs, all lovingly and locally made by this merry band of chaps who meet up weekly for chat and all things crafty.
The community soap opera team – Meadows to Meaders – invited visitors to share school dinner stories and anecdotes for the next installment of the production, where the script is always based on true Southmead stories.
The first Southmead Seed Swap was planted with help from partners Bristol Seed Swap, Bristol RSPB, and the NBT Green Spaces team. They offered growing advice and nature activities (which were popular with the young ones).
Southmead’s Climate & Nature Action team chatted with residents about home energy ideas and the local projects that the community wants to see happen. There were also home thermometer freebies – did you get yours?
There was also the very first Southmead Repair Cafe where volunteers were on hand to fix the loved but broken items that residents want to keep and reuse. The Café will now be happening every month, alongside Greenway Market, and is a wonderful new addition to community-led action in Southmead.
The opening of the new Greenway Gym Boxing Zone also took place and visitors surprised themselves with how brilliant it felt to have a go on a punch bag! We hope many will be back to take up the therapeutic benefits, including stress relief, that non-contact boxing activities bring.
A fine day of celebrating Southmead’s culture, cuisine, climate, crafts, and community action was had by all. Thank you to everyone who helped or came along, and thank you to our partners Bristol Community Festival.
It was a pleasure to throw open Greenway’s doors and welcome everyone to join in. We hope this super Spring event will happen again next year so do watch this space.
