Bright Ideas From Bristol Free School

Bristol Free School worked with United Communities as part of their enterprise day to inspire students. They had a chance to create their own housing development and come up with their own exciting, brand new scheme for Southmead.

The day looked at the potential for the housing site at the former Dunmail Primary School. The students were introduced to the day by the Bristol Mayor, Marvin Rees, and the TV personality – Kevin McCloud who both recorded short films to encourage creativity and innovation. The young people were encouraged to develop a site that fits with both the existing homes and the natural surroundings – the results were incredible!

The pupils presented their ideas in a Dragon’s Den style to experts including Cllr. Paul Smith who is the lead for Housing and Communities in Bristol. The pupils loved the day and enjoyed gaining an insight into the issues around housing, homelessness, and open spaces, but above all they enjoyed creating solutions to these issues. In addition to this, pupils were offered interview experience from a number of local professional agencies.

It was a fantastic day with new ideas for housing – the future now could really lie in the hands of these talented youngsters!
