Play with Clay – a new course at Southmead’s new creative workshop

Southmead Maker Space is a community pottery studio in Southmead, run by Southmead Development Trust, the community’s local charity – a collection of staff, volunteers and local residents working together to support our communities to thrive.

The Maker Space is based at The Ranch (Southmead Adventure Playground) and will offer pottery workshops for all ages and abilities, and provide a welcoming space to come together to learn and create.

We are launching our first course on Friday 27th August!

Ceramics Hand-building: an introduction to hand building with clay

This 4 week course offers an excellent introduction to ‘hand building’ with clay in a friendly, welcoming environment. You will be taught a variety of hand-building techniques that will allow you to make ceramics that can be used at home as functional pots, put on display as sculptures, or be Christmas gifts for the special people in your life!

Weeks 1 and 2 of the course will you introduce you to hand building techniques such as ‘pinching’, ‘coiling’ and ‘slab building’.

In weeks 3 and 4 you will continue to develop these skills while being introduced to methods for surface decoration using ‘underglazes’, as well as simple glazing, to complete your piece.

This course is ideal for someone who is just beginning to learn about pottery and clay.  If you are already confident in hand-building you are also welcome to come along and work with your own projects.  The class is 2 hours long each week.
