Get On Your Bike Southmead

When Norman Tebbit told us in the eighties ‘to get on our bikes’ never would he have imagined that Bristol would become such a cycling city. Whether you agree with Mr Tebbit or not, you can’t deny that there is plenty of opportunity for us to get cycling, for work and leisure!

For those of us joining on late to the craze it can seem a bit daunting to just get out there and go. Thankfully there is a great new group in Southmead who want to do short ride outs around the neighbourhood and local area – all for free.

Bike Minded are peddling throughout the summer – see their programme below – and even have a couple of bikes to borrow if you don’t have one. They are not only cycling but doing interesting things along the way – for example on Thursday they are going to visit Feed Bristol and Avon Wildlife Trust’s Wellbeing Day!

If you can’t make the session don’t worry, there is plenty coming up. More regularly on the third Monday of every month they have a bike café at Roll for the Soul on the Quay Side (BS1 2JL). You get your first tea or coffee free and can get the bike checked out whilst you recover from whizzing down to the city centre.

Those bit by the biking bug can get themselves even more involved by volunteering or getting paid to lead riders on one of the many trips. In exchange for your time they will offer you a place on the National Standard Instructor Training Course. If you want to volunteer call 0117 353 4580 and if you want a job take a look at https://www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/jobs. Deadline is 21st July.

Tebbit would be chuffed…
